Exemptions - General Regulations

  1. Candidates who have passed an examination as a whole in one Faculty may be granted exemption in another Faculty in a subject or subjects which he has passed in that examination, provided:

    (a) the courses leading to the examinations in the subject in the two Faculties are not substantially different and

    (b) the standard attained in the exempting examination is equivalent to the standard required for the examination in which exemption is required (in particular a pass by compensation will not suffice).

  2. The granting of such exemption requires the permission of the Academic Council except in the following cases in which it is automatic:

    (a) Exemptions will be automatic (subject to (a) and (b) of Section 1) in the appropriate subjects as between First Arts, Commerce-Level 1, First University (Common), First Bachelor of Civil Law, First Bachelor of Social Science, First Diploma in Librarianship. First Year Mathematics passed at any First University Examination except First Architecture, First Agriculture and First Commerce will exempt from this subject at any other First Year Examination, except the First Year Examination in Engineering. First Year Mathematical Physics passed at any First University Examination except First Architecture will exempt from this subject at any other First Year Examination, except the First Year Examination in Engineering.

    (b) Subjects passed at First Arts will exempt from these subjects at the Foundation level of the Modular Degree (30 credits per exemption).

  3. Candidates who have obtained exemption(s) in any subject(s) of a First University Examination will be granted the same exemption(s) at another First University Examination, provided:

    (a) the courses leading to the examination(s) in the subject(s) in the two Faculties are not substantially different, and

    (b) the standard attained in the exempting examination is equivalent to the standard required for an exemption in the examination in which exemption is sought.

  4. Where exemptions are granted, the date of such exemption shall be the date of the exempting examination.

  5. A candidate will not be granted compensation and exemption at the same examination
