SPECIAL EXTERN EXAMINERS

Welcome to the Special Extern Examiners homepage. We hope to provide you with the necessary information you require to act as an Extern Examiner in UCD.

Special Extern Examiners are appointed to read theses submitted for the PhD Degree, Research Masters Degree, MD Degree, MCh Degree or Professional Doctorate Degree.

PhD Policies, Regulations and Guidelines
The regulations governing the conduct of the examination of the PhD Degree differ depending on whether the candidate commenced the PhD Degree before September 2006 (pre-06) or from September 2006 onwards (post-06).

THESIS REPORT FORM
The signed thesis report form for all Degrees is sent to the Chair of the Examination Committee. In cases where a viva voce examination is required the report form will be signed by all the examiners once the viva voce examination has taken place.

READING FEE
The University pays the following reading fee:

PhD Degree €250
Professional Doctorate and MD Degrees €250
Research Masters and MCh Degrees €102

VISITING EXPENSES FOR PHD VIVA VOCE EXAMINATION
UCD covers the accommodation, travel and subsistence expenses associated with a viva voce examination of a PhD candidate, up to approved limits.

Accommodation
When you visit UCD, accommodation will be reimbursed up to and not exceeding €125 per night on submission of vouched receipts.

Incidental expenses (where applicable)
These will be paid by the University on the submission of vouched receipts and should not exceed the current daily UCD subsistence rate of €33.61. Details of subsistence rates are available on the UCD Bursars website.

Travelling Expenses
Travelling expenses are paid by UCD to cover your visit to the University on submission of vouched receipts. It is requested that the most economical form of transport to UCD is used, which may include flights, parking and taxis.  For example, flights should be booked as far as possible in advance in order to obtain the most competitive rate.  Current UCD motor travel rates are available on the UCD Bursars website. It is advised that you provide your own Insurance Cover.
