Academic Operational Schedule 07/08 |
Dear Colleague,
Welcome to our first bulletin for the new Academic Year 07/08
The UCD Strategic Plan 2005-2008 set an ambitious target to implement a fully modular and semesterised curriculum by September 2007. As we complete the Registration for students for 2007- 08 session, it is with great satisfaction and pride that we can point to a successful start to the academic year. Within 3 years, UCD has become a modular university. All staff have played their part in achieving the required transition. I look forward, with you, to realising the benefits in terms of the learning experience we offer students. As normal, a review will be conducted as there are still areas, particularly in how we deal with satisfying student choice and elective availability, which we need to consider collectively. Moving on from registration, we are already at the advanced stages of drafting the Semester 1 exam timetable, as a commitment has been made to staff and students to publish the final version by 31st October 2007.
In respect of some administrative initiatives, we have introduced a new UCD Connect email policy for students to ensure the University is engaged in more effective communication with students. We have also designed a new Academic Operational Schedule for 07/08 comprising of important operational, academic and administrative dates. It is the intention that the schedule will enable advance planning and efficient management of key operational activities.
A number of appointments have also been made which may be of interest to you, with details provided later in the bulletin. Also, as you may be aware, some reconfiguration with my overall office has led to the creation of UCD Registry.
I hope that you find the Bulletin helpful. As always, I am keen to hear your feedback and ideas, so please do let me have your thoughts.

UCD Registry has evolved structurally in line with developments in modularisation and in line with management reconfiguration within the overall Office of the Registrar and Deputy President. UCD Registry is headed up by the Director of Registry, Kevin Griffin, and comprises five units: Academic Policy & Programme Development; Student Recruitment; Operations; Assessment & Logistics; and SySDEM (Systems, Support, Development and Enrolment Management), together with Director of Registry’s Office (which includes Assistant to Director, and Communications and Information Officer). Full details available at: http://www.ucd.ie/registry The UCD Registry website has a number of new features, including detailed team organisational charts and a Service A-Z facility. There is also a feedback form should you wish to send us your input about the site. |

Student registration online has been open since August 14th and I am pleased to say that both the online system and the extensive support arrangements put in place right across the University have proved very successful. Registration is a very important part of the academic calendar and we can see from last year the consequences that follow if it does not go smoothly. An enormous effort from a huge number of dedicated staff has made this year’s exercise the success it is and I would like to express my own and the President’s appreciation for the high level of commitment shown. Information and presentations on Registration 07 are available by clicking here. |

Academic Operational Schedule 07/08 An Academic Operational Schedule for 07/08 has been drawn up by a cross-University group, led by UCD Registry, and I would like to thank members of the group who met during the summer to work on this task. The Schedule is targeted at a University-wide audience and is comprised of important operational, academic and administration dates which span the academic cycle; 2007-08.The intention is to provide advance notice of key dates to enable advance planning and efficient management of key operational activities. Key categories identified within the Schedule include; Admission; Assessment; Careers; Committees; Conferring; Information Capture; Registration; Student Activity; Student Data; and Student Recruitment. The Schedule can be sorted either by category or month, or all categories/months can be viewed simultaneously. Please click here to view the schedule. We welcome your feedback and there is a form on the site for you to fill in and send us your comments. |

UCD wishes to ensure that systems are in place to ensure that the University is engaged in more effective communication with students. To that end we have introduced an email policy for students whereby it is the intention of the University to use UCD connect email as the primary channel through which to communicate administration-related information to students. Students have been communicated with through various channels to ensure they are aware that it is their responsibility to check their UCD Connect email account for messages, read them and act on any requests contained in the messages. I would ask all staff when emailing students to use only their UCD Connect email address. For further information please click here. |

The final exam timetable for Semester 1 will be available to all staff and students on Wednesday 31st October 2007. Over the coming weeks, there will be further communication from UCD Registry to relevant staff, particularly Heads of School, on producing an accurate timetable. It is very important that we do not have a repeat of the difficulties surrounding the May exam timetable. In terms of the exam session in December, the various extra supports put in place in May, and which proved to be successful, will be put in place again (such as guaranteed study space, catering, exam helpers, bus service between exam venues, etc) |
