The Diagnostic Veterinary Bacteriology Laboratory (DVBL) provides a diagnostic service for the University Teaching Hospital, UCD as well as for veterinary practitioners around Ireland. One of our main research areas involves collaborative projects with the Irish National MRSA Research Laboratory (NMRSARL) in St.James’s Hospital, Dublin. The DVBL has published surveillance research into isolation rates of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in clinically affected pets (cats and dogs) and in horses and liaises with the NMRSARL into molecular characterisation and comparison of animal and human isolates.
The DVBL monitors the emergence of zoonotic pathogens, such as MRSA, in animals in Ireland and therefore provides important research data which has implications for both veterinary and human medicine.
