Using DNA to pick a winner

Dr Hill's research into the so-called 'speed gene' investigated the genetic influences on racing performance in Thoroughbred horses. Her research led to the development of a test that can predict the best distance for an individual horse.

A spin-out company, Equinome, was established in 2010 to commercialise the outputs of this research. The economic impact of her research has been evident in the creation of jobs in the company, while the technology has the potential to transform how those in the multi-billion dollar global bloodstock industry make key decisions.
