IP Policy and Commercialisation
NovaUCD is responsible for the implementation of UCD policies relating to intellectual property (IP) and for the provision of advice on the identification, protection and exploitation of UCD's IP.
Commercialisation
When UCD researchers have an idea, service or product that they believe has commercial potential, NovaUCD’s technology transfer team is on hand to help translate the innovations into licensing opportunities and/or spin-out companies.
The key steps in NovaUCD’s commercialisation process are:
- Review and assessment of invention
- Protecting the invention
- Development of a commercialisation strategy
- Marketing and licensing of the invention or
- Creating a new start-up company.
Technology Transfer
The technology transfer team within NovaUCD is built around the key activities:
- Identifying IP arising from UCD research programmes
- Protecting this IP as appropriate
- Commercialising this IP whether through licensing to a commercial partner or the creation of a spin-out company.
NovaUCD has a structured approach to ensure that IP is identified and appropriately protected at UCD. Members of the technology transfer team regularly meet with UCD researchers to:
- Provide advice on the commercial aspects of research proposals and contracts
- Monitor the progress of research projects
- Provide appropriate assistance to the researchers at the different stages of their research projects
- Remind researchers of UCD’s contractual obligations to funding agencies and companies and implement UCD’s policy on intellectual property
NovaUCD’s technology transfer team is also responsible for the drafting, reviewing, and/or negotiating a range of agreements including:
- Material transfer and non-disclosure agreements
- Contract research agreements
- Collaborative research agreements with other public research organisations and industry
- Consortium agreements such as FP7, Strategic Research Clusters, CSETs and Competence Centres.
