Speaking at the inaugural Images of Research awards and exhibition, Professor Des Fitzgerald, Vice-President for Research in UCD announced the 12 competition winners and said that "an image is a powerful tool in research and it is essential that researchers develop the ability to create images that can convey complex ideas". In addition, he added, "research images can be beautiful or intriguing and like art, can convey something beyond what is obviously depicted. For a public deluged with visual information, a show-stopping image is often the only way to inform, by stripping away obscure technical language."
