UCD hosts 2nd Annual Images of Research awards ceremony & Exhibition

Saturday, 20 October, 2007

Maria Cederlund, UCD School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Sciences and UCD Conway Institute was the overall winner of the 2007 Images of Research Competition which was announced at an awards ceremony which took place on Monday, October 15th in O’Reilly Hall, University College Dublin. The winning image is entitled Gene Expression in Zebrafish and depicts a beautifully symmetrical image of the humble zebrafish.

A unique event in Ireland, the exhibition featured over 215 images taken by researchers in UCD, showcasing the depth and diversity of research taking place in the university. The images were submitted from researchers in 21 Schools and all Research Institutes throughout UCD. Particularly well represented in this year’s competition were the College of Life Sciences and the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Professor Des Fitzgerald, Vice President for Research in UCD said that “the images are a terrific visual testimony to the work of the research community in UCD. They engage the imagination in a way that sometimes a textual description of a research project could not.”

The annual competition offers UCD researchers the opportunity to submit compelling digital images created in the course of their research. The competition is open to all UCD researchers including: academics, postdoctoral fellows, postgraduate students and technicians as well as staff of UCD’s affiliated teaching hospitals.

All research images submitted to this year’s competition will be on display in O’Reilly Hall and UCD Research until Friday, October 19th.

COMPETITION WINNERS :
Overall Winner:

Maria Cederlund, School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Sciences & UCD Conway Institute, for her image Gene Expression in Zebrafish Embryos. The violet stain in this image shows where the gene mab21l2 is expressed in the 28 hours zebrafish embryo. Expression domains include the eye, tectum and neural tube.

2nd Place:

Daniel Cantero Lauer, School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering, for his image Bridge’s Soul. This image shows the relative error of the UNB (Under vehicle Bending moment) for different frequencies of sine wave road profiles, taking as reference the response for 1cm amplitude.

3rd Place:

Cormac Nolan, School of Biology and Environmental Science, for his image Sleeping with the Anemone. This image is of a Caribbean spotted cleaner shrimp that uses its bright colours and white antennae to attract clients to its anemone. This one was spotted in the shallows after a research dive collecting fish in Turneffe Atoll, Belize.
