UCD President Dr Hugh Brady has formally launched UCD’s Intellectual Property Policy and Procedures (2006) in NovaUCD, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at UCD.

A major objective for UCD is to contribute to the social, economic and cultural objectives of a knowledge society - this Policy is intended to actively support the commercialisation of university Intellectual Property in a way which ensures maximum benefit to society and the Irish economy, while providing a significant increase in financial incentives and recognition for the creator of the intellectual property. The university’s share of income from successful commercialisation will be used to fund further research and development, innovation, technology transfer, commercialisation and related activities.

This Policy, which incorporates and replaces the main provisions of the UCD Patents Policy and Programme (1992), was developed in accordance with international best practice and takes account of the changes in legislation and national codes of practice which have been incorporated into the terms and conditions of funded research contracts.

NovaUCD is responsible for the implementation of UCD’s policies relating to the commercialisation of intellectual property and for the management of the intellectual property portfolio arising from UCD’s research programmes. A key priority of NovaUCD is to work with UCD researchers in identifying, protecting and commercialising the intellectual property arising from their research programmes and to take innovative ideas from proof-of-principle to full commercial success.
