UCD Professor receives international award for achievement in wind integration

Wednesday, 30 April, 2008

Professor of Electrical Engineering, Mark O’Malley has been honoured by the Utility Wind Integration Group (UWIG) as a recipient of the group’s Annual Achievement Award. Professor O’Malley shared the honour with Paul Smith (Eirgrid) and Leslie Bryans (Northern Ireland Electricity) in recognition of their impressive input and leadership in the production of the ‘All-Island Grid Study for Renewables Integration’.

The All Island Grid Study was launched earlier this year and is a comprehensive technical research project on the ability of the electrical power system and the national grid to absorb large amounts of electricity produced from renewable sources.

Congratulating the Irish recipients of the award, Eamon Ryan, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources said: ‘When I published this report in January I described it as groundbreaking and one of the most detailed studies anywhere in the world on grid integration of renewable electricity generation.”

“I am pleased to see that the study is now gaining international recognition and that team members are now recipients of a major US achievement award for their outstanding work in delivering the all-island grid study. This shows the progress that we are making in turning Ireland into one of the leading countries in the world in developing our renewable energy resources. I congratulate Paul, Leslie and Mark on their success which is representative of the hard work and dedication shown by them and all those involved in the working group," Minister Ryan added.

Professor O’Malley is the director of the Electricity Research Centre at UCD
