The latest booklets in the series of National Guidelines of Good Practice published by the Irish Universities Quality Board (IUQB) have been launched. The purpose of the booklets, entitled “Good Practice in Institutional Research in Irish Higher Education” and “Good Practice in Strategic Planning for Academic Units in Irish Universities”, is to facilitate the development of policies, regulations, procedures and documentation governing institutional research, and strategic planning in Irish higher education institutions.

Mr Tom Boland, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) who launched the booklets commented: “The Irish Universities Quality Board has been instrumental in raising standards through these publications. We want to ensure that those standards are well recognised throughout Ireland and overseas.”

Chairperson of IUQB Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness said: “The areas of institutional research, strategic planning and quality assurance have been recognised as a key triad in the approach of the modern higher education institute. These booklets aim to establish good practice for Irish higher education in the key areas of teaching and learning, research, strategic planning/ management and administration. This is in keeping with the IUQB’s aim to increase the level of inter-institutional co-operation in developing enhancement-led quality processes.”

Chief Executive of IUQB, Dr Padraig Walsh said: “I hope that each institution sees these documents as containing valid statements of good practice. The booklets are the result of inter-institutional projects on topics selected, organised and driven by IUQB with the close collaboration of HEIs, and funded by the HEA and the Irish universities. We appreciate the efforts of all involved. By the development of quality standards Irish higher educational providers can be a benchmark for other institutions internationally.”
