The UCD Health Sciences Centre and UCD Research building have been recognised by the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI)  at the 2008 Irish Architecture Awards

The UCD Health Sciences Centre, designed by Murray Ó Laoire Architects, was Highly Commended in the categories of Best Educational Building and Best Sustainable Project. The UCD Research building, designed by RKD Architects  was selected for inclusion in the Awards’ exhibition in the Educational Building category.

Commenting on the submissions to the 2008 Irish Architecture Awards, Joan O’Connor, Chair of the Jury said: “These buildings, which the profession recognises by its awards, are the products of the creative and considered interaction of client and architect in relationships of mutual respects: the character of the patrons who commissioned these projects is reflected in the quality of their buildings.”

President of the RIAI, Sean Ó Laoire said: “Sustainability is the context for the awards and architects are at the forefront of delivering on this. If our commitments to preventing climate change are to be delivered on, then how we design and make our buildings is a critical factor”.

The winners were presented with awards by John Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. RTE broadcaster Ryan Tubridy hosted the Awards at a ceremony in The chq Building in the IFSC in Dublin. Winning projects included buildings in Cork, Donegal, Dublin and Limerick.

The assessing jury for the awards
included Rob Docter, Director of the Berlage Institute, Netherlands;
Greg Tisdall, Duff Tisdall; Paul Keogh, Paul Keogh Architects; Nicki Matthews, Conservation Architect; and Emma Cullinan, Irish Times.

The UCD Health Sciences Centre and UCD Research Building are among the buildings featured in the Irish Architecture Awards Exhibition which is running in the RIAI gallery until September. The exhibition, which will travel to approximately 20 venues around Ireland and to London in the coming months, is intended to communicate the range, variety and quality of the Architects work in any one year.
