UCD Geary Institute

UCD Geary Institute

The UCD Geary Institute has been positioned highly in the latest rankings of university economics groups. The rankings from the Research Papers in Economics database (RePEc), places the Geary Institute at 57 globally and 17 in Europe amongst university based centres, positioning it ahead of Economics groups at Oxford and Cambridge as well as other major EU and US centres.  This places Geary in the ‘Global 5%’ of economics research providers.

Individual academics associated with the Institute were also ranked highly by RePEc. UCD academics who ranked in the top European 10% aggregated across all ranking measurements were Prof Paul Devereux, Prof Colm Harmon,  Prof Karl Whelan, Prof Ronald Davies, Prof James Markusen (all UCD School of Economics) and Prof James Heckman.  External fellows affiliated to UCD who featured in the European top 10% were Adjunct Professor of Health Economics at UCD, Dr James Smith (RAND), Prof Ian Walker (University of Warwick) and Dr Arnaud Chevalier (University of London).

The latest RePEc rankings also reveal that a number of UCD academics are ranked in the top 5% globally on the h-index. The h-index measures the distribution of citations received by a given researcher's publications.  Nobel Laureate Professor Heckman is the second ranked economist globally on this index.

Professor Colm Harmon, Director of the UCD Geary Institute commented: 'Economics is a strong discipline in Ireland so the Institute having economics as a centre of focus is clearly well justified.   The incredible rise is all the more remarkable given the short period of time since the Institute was established.   On the 10th anniversary of PRTLI this is an incredible success story for UCD, Irish economics and the PRTLI process.'   He added, 'the future looks even brighter for the Geary Institute with internal and external fellows coming on board all the time as the presence of the Institute internationally solidifies'.

Professor Rodney Thom, Head of UCD School of Economics commented: 'The UCD School of Economics and the Geary Institute are now in a position unprecedented in the history of Irish economics.   The Institute provides significant support in terms of the development of graduate programmes and as a centrepoint to focus on economics research in UCD.   As we develop our graduate programmes in collaboration with colleagues in NUIM and TCD these sorts of rankings place UCD in a leadership position and will help us to attract high quality students.   We are clearly competing in the major league now – that brings challenges but also great rewards.'
