Eleanor Cunningham, PhD student in the UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, was announced as the overall winner of the 2009 UCD Research Images Competition, which took place on October 14th in UCD. The winning image, entitled 'Into the Deep Blue’ depicts a microscopic image of sea lice, which is a parasite to salmon.
In second place, for her image capturing the spirit of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's autobiography 'La grande Milano tradizionale e futurista' was Selena Daly, UCD School of Languages and Literatures. Dr Sebastien Peuchmaille, UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science was awarded third prize for his image of a bat species which is adapted for hearing high frequencies inaudible to humans.
This year, a new award for Judges' Choice was made to Yvonne Abbott, UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine for her image depicting MRSA colonies.
325 images were submitted to the 2009 Competition, from 26 Schools and many UCD Research Institutes and Major Collaborative Programmes.
All 2009 winning and shortlisted images are now available in a digital exhibition on the UCD Research website: www.ucd.ie/research/images. In addition to providing a highly visual viewing experience, this exhibition provides further information on the research projects that are behind the images.
In addition to the exhibition of research images that is taking place in UCD Research, a collection of research images on the theme of 'Environment' are being exhibited in a unique exhibition in the gardens of Newman House, St Stephen's Green until Friday 23rd October.
