A team of researchers at the UCD Conway Institute have won the Accuri Flow Cytometer Creativity Award Programme.

Dr Gethin McBean, Dr Alice Vines and Dr Alfonso Blanco Fernández were awarded the prize of an Accuri C6 Flow Cytometer System worth €30,000 and an associated service contract for one year which will be a welcome addition to the core technology facility within UCD Conway Institute. The team received the award for their research outlining the use of a flow-cytometric method for continuous measurement of intracellular Ca2+ concentration.

Flow cytometry is a technology used to measure intrinsic (size, shape, granularity, etc.) and extrinsic cell characteristics (DNA, internal and external receptors, etc.). The technology has many applications in cellular research in humans, animals, plants and micro-organisms.

The Accuri Flow Cytometer Creativity Award Programme was established last year in an effort to support new and innovative research, and to help scientists expand the use of flow cytometers. The organisers, Accuri, recently announced the success of the team of UCD Conway Institute researchers on the Times Square billboard in New York.
