Business Award for UCD scientist and entrepreneur

Dr Emmeline Hill, a genomics researcher in the UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, and co-founder of Equinome, has scooped the Business Category Award at the 2011 David Manley Emerging Business Entrepreneur Awards.

Equinome, a University College Dublin spin-out company, established in 2009, assists the bloodstock industry to maximise the genetic potential of Thoroughbred horses.  In this multi-billion euro industry, Ireland has earned a reputation as a global leader through its consistent production of world champion horses. The company is headquartered at NovaUCD, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre.

Last month, at an event in Sydney, Equinome launched its genetic-testing service to the Australian bloodstock industry. The company has already secured major clients in Australia, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, UK and USA.

Established in 2003, the David Manley Emerging Business Entrepreneur Awards are recognised as a leading accolade for emerging enterprises in Ireland. They aim to nurture the enterprising spirit in business, the arts and in social/community.

Angel Luis Gonzalez who staged PhotoIreland, Ireland’s first international festival of photography and visual culture in 2010 was presented with the Arts Category Award.

Anne Bedos, who founded Rothar, a bike shop with a social focus in 2008, was presented with the overall 2011 David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Award. Rothar is a not-for-profit organisation that recycles discarded bikes and provides training and job opportunities to people from disadvantaged communities.

In 2010, Dr Emmeline Hill was presented with the IMAGE Magazine Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

The David Manley Awards were established in 2003 by a group in the Dublin Chamber of Commerce to honour his contribution to the encouragement and mentoring of SMEs during his short life time.  David was President of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce in 2000.
