Mattia Bramini
Mattia Bramini (Centre for BioNano Interactions) won the Young Scientist Award at the European Materials Research Society 2011 Spring Meeting, held in Nice, France from 9-12 May 2011 (http://www.emrs-strasbourg.com/). Mattia was successful for his outstanding oral presentation “Validation of a human blood-brain barrier cell model for screening of nanoparticle uptake and transcytosis”, which was presented in Session O: Bio-nanomaterials for imaging, sensing and actuating.
Mattia joined CBNI in January 2010 as a doctoral student. His PhD research is focused on establishing and validating a cellular model of the human Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) for use as a screening tool to understand if, and how, nanoparticles access the brain. The goal of this research is to understand the mechanisms of uptake and transport of model nanoparticles through this biological barrier that is so effective at protecting our brains from foreign materials, and to connect this with the surface properties of the nanoparticles. His investigations are part of the NeuroNano project, a small collaborative project funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme (www.neuronano.eu).
Mattia graduated in 2007 from Universita degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia with a BSc in Biotechnology and in 2009 from the same university with an MSc in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.
