Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Ms Frances Fitzgerald visited the National Children’s Research Centre (NCRC) at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin on Friday, March 9th 2012 to launch the book, Newborn Surgery (3rd edition) by Conway Fellow, Professor Prem Puri, UCD Newman Clinical Research Professor and President of the National Children's Research Centre.

Newborn Surgery provides an authoritative, comprehensive and complete account of the pathophysiology, investigation and treatment of various surgical conditions in the newborn.  First published in 1996, it has become the standard reference book for paediatric surgeons, paediatricians and neonatologists, both in the developed and developing world.  This edition has been extensively revised and contains many new chapters, taking account of the recent advances in prenatal diagnosis, imaging, intensive care and operative techniques.  It comprises of 105 chapters and 1020 pages by 160 contributors from all five continents of the world covering the full spectrum of the specialty of neonatal surgery as well as a comprehensive general overview of the guiding principles.  Each chapter has been written by world class experts in their respective fields, including 15 chapters by Irish paediatric surgeons and paediatricians. 

During launch of the book, the Minister acknowledged the enormous contribution both to paediatric surgery and research by Professor Prem Puri. It has been a life mission for him to share his knowledge and expertise, not just in Ireland but throughout the world. His standing has been widely recognised by his colleagues internationally and they have honoured him with the election to the Presidency of the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons and honorary fellowships from a number of medical and scientific societies worldwide. Minister Fitzgerald stated that Professor Puri’s energy and enthusiasm for sharing his discoveries has earned the National Children’s Research Centre an international reputation and she congratulated and thanked him for an enormous contribution to Irish paediatrics.
