Meduses Dorees from the film OCEANS - Richard Hermann
The UCD Imagine Science Film Festival was officially launched with a free open air screening of the French film OCÉANS on Earth Day, Sunday 22nd April. Described not as a documentary, but as a wild opera, OCÉANS takes the audience deep into the very waters that sustain all of mankind—exploring the creatures that live within, and featuring spectacular and previously unseen footage captured by the latest underwater technologies. OCÉANS puts audiences at the very heart of the action, leaping with dolphins and swimming shoulder-to-fin with the great white shark.
A pre-screening panel discussion with the Director Jacques Cluzaud and OCÉANS Scientific Advisor, Dr François Sarano, was chaired by writer & broadcaster Leo Enright with UCD researchers Professor Chris Bean and Professor Frédéric Dias from UCD Earth Institute, and Charlotte O’Kelly from TechWorks Marine. Prof Chris Bean, Director of the UCD Earth Institute, said “as an Island nation we appreciate the importance of our coastal and marine resources. Screening this incredible film OCÉANS is an exciting way of exploring the world’s oceans while giving us the opportunity to draw attention to the sea that surrounds this island and the research and innovative marine technologies being developed here that will contribute to our future marine culture.”

The OCÉANS screening was the inaugural event of the UCD Imagine Science Film Festival which is a project developed by UCD to bring science to the public through film and digital media during Dublin City of Science 2012. Prof Des Fitzgerald, Vice-President for Research at UCD said “the UCD Imagine Science Film Festival gives the public a unique way to access current thought-provoking scientific issues in an informal and accessible way. Our objective for the festival is to connect science, research and culture using cinema as the channel for expression.”
The screening was supported by the French Embassy in Ireland in partnership with Veolia Environnement and the UCD Earth Institute.
