The UCD College of Science is delighted to announce the launch of a new artist in residence scheme to enable artists, scientists and students to collaborate in creating new work. In this pilot phase, a one year residency is being offered to a number of professional artists, that includes a shared studio space, materials budget, access to lectures, and other resources within the College of Science. Most importantly, it will facilitate direct collaboration between the artists and scientists in UCD.
Through an open call for expressions of interest from professional artists and UCD scientists, it aims to establish a dynamic interdisciplinary network of collaborative partnerships. The artists will also act as facilitators to students taking the Tunnelling Art and Science module, which is a Fine Art NCAD/UCD Science collaborative module that is offered to all science students as an elective module in Year 3.
Artists interested in applying for the UCD Artist in Residency Programme should send a 300 word expression of interest, that includes a brief description of their work, an outline of which specific area of science they are interested in and reasons why they would benefit from collaborating within a specific school or institute within the UCD College of Science . It is preferable that artists have an already existing interest in a specific area of research. However an application with reference to two or three potential areas of interest will be considered and all efforts will be made to find a key collaborative partner in your stated area of interest, for successful applicants. The residency does not include accommodation.
As part of the collaboration, artists will be asked to give a talk about their collaboration during the Tunnelling Art and Science module between NCAD and UCD Science and to offer tutorial guidance to one of the collaborative projects within the Tunnelling Art and Science module. The artists will also participate in an open studio day, where they will talk with staff and students about their work. Following the residency, artists will be asked to contribute a piece of work created during the residency to the College of Science.
For more information on the participating schools, institutes and centres of research within UCD please see:
If you are a research scientist or academic staff member within the UCD College of Science, or an associated research centre or institute, and are interested in collaborating with an artist in this residency programme, please send your expression of interest by email to Professor Lorraine Hanlon (Lorraine.Hanlon@ucd.ie) before September 14th, stating briefly your area of research and outlining your particular interest in the scheme. It is anticipated that developing the collaboration will require a significant amount of your time to be successful, so please bear this in mind.
