Electricity Research Centre

The Electricity Research Centre (ERC) is a unique collaboration between academia and major players in the electricity industry to tackle fundamental and applied research questions underpinning the development of a sustainable electrical energy system.

 ABOUT ERC

The ERC was founded by Professor Mark O'Malley in the early 1990s and is in its current form since 2001. There are currently four academics, including one based in Economics in Trinity College Dublin, and approximately 40 people in the research group.

FUNDING

The ERC is funded by Industry Members, the Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems (SEES) SFI Strategic Research Cluster, an SFI Charles Parsons Energy Research Award, and other sources including SFI Principal Investigator, Engineering, TIDA and Research Frontiers Programmes, HEA PRTLI 5, EU, IRCSET, Teagasc and IRCHSS.

The ERC undertakes research in areas crucial to the development of sustainable electrical energy systems, including:

OUTPUTS

The knowledge generated in the ERC is at the leading edge of improving understanding of the issues internationally, and contributes to industry developments and policy formation. In addition, more than twenty alumni are playing pivotal roles in the energy industry, both in Ireland
and abroad.

COLLABORATION

Industry Members include: ABB, Bord Gáis, Bord na Móna, Commission for Energy Regulation, Cylon, EirGrid, Electric Ireland, EPRI, ESB International, ESB Networks, Gaelectric, Intel, SSE Renewables, UTRC, and Viridian. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, the Economic and Social Research Institute and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources have observer status on the ERC board.

The ERC also has strong collaborative links with other national and international bodies including Risø DTU, Denmark; NREL, USA and Durham University, UK.
