The Irish Drug Delivery Network (IDDN) is a Science Foundation Ireland funded public-private consortium for drug delivery research in Ireland. It combines leading delivery researchers from UCD, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Directed by Prof. David Brayden and funded by SFI since 2007, the extensive network of its Principal Investigators provides the detailed knowledge required to solve specific research problems in drug delivery.
Specialising in overcoming tissue barriers to efficient delivery of peptides and siRNA, the Network has provided skills in physicochemical characterisation of bioactives, in vitro bioassay and animal models
of oral, pulmonary and intra-articular (I.A.) delivery. It also has expertise in animal models of joint and lung inflammation and Huntington's disease.
The Irish Drug Delivery Network has received a major investment of €4.9 million over the five years of the project with a further €0.5 million in funding coming from its industry partners.
With a critical mass of expertise, scientists in the IDDN hope to create new and better methods of delivering biopharmaceuticals.
The IDDN is based on a collaboration between scientists in the UCD Conway Institute and the Schools of Pharmacy in Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and University College Cork. The IDDN also supports student and staff placements in the University of Toyama (Japan), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and Bart's and the London Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry (UK).
