Urban Institute of Ireland
The 820m2 Institute was built in 2002 and is staffed by 85 Principal Investigators, along with 7 PhD students and 5 post docs. Established as a centre for the development of new technologies, policies and ideas to improve the quality of the working and living environment, the UII has become an important international centre for research on urban and development issues.
The institute was built in 2002 having received over €6m in funding from Cycles 1 & 2 of the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions. Since then, it has been awarded almost €14m in external funding.
Staff at the UII have published over 500 publications to date. In addition, 39 PhD students have graduated from the Institute since its launch.
The UII is currently negotiating co-operation agreements with the European Commission Laboratories at Ispra, Italy and the University of Illinois, Chicago. In addition, UII investigators have on-going collaborations with a number of national and international organisations including: NUI Maynooth, Institute of Applied Physics, The Martin Centre, Cambridge University, Fraunhofer Institute, Technical University of Athens and URBIS in addition to the University of Trondheim, Queens University, Canada and Washington State University.
