Biography

I graudated with a BAgrSc (Hons) degree from University College Dublin in 2001. I then moved to West Lafayette, Indiana in the US to do a masters degree in Animal Breeding, from which I graduated in 2004. After completing my masters degree I began a PhD in cooperation with Purdue University and the United States Department of Agriculture, where I looked at the genetic effects of the neuroendocrine response to social stress in White Leghorn hens from group selected lines and individual selected lines. I graduated with my PhD in December2008.

My current research interests are determining the genetic factors associated with the twinning frequency in beef cattle. I have also established a Central Progeny Testing sheep flock at UCD. The objective of this flock is to contribute to the phenotypic and genotypic information currently being collected by Sheep Ireland, and to also collect information on intensive phenotypes such as residual feed intake, methane emissions, growth rates, and lameness. Tissue for DNA collection has been collected from all sheep at UCD Lyons Estate and will be used to determine QTLs for these traits.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

The most important trait of a good teacher is to inspire a lifelong love and curiosity in their subject and provides students with the tools to try and satisfy that curiosity and continue to enhance their knowledge of the subject long after they have left the classroom.

Enhancement of Teaching

Improving my ability to teach is extremely important to me. I have taken the following steps to strive to be a better teacher: My understanding of student learning is obtained from talking to a random subsample of students throughout the semester to ask them how I can better delivery components of the modules. End of semester student reviews are also helpful in this regard. To foster independent thinking, I interact with the class and ask them questions and their opinions on how various animal breeding and statistical technologies are currently used in industry and how future developments in these technologies could affect industry. I used student feedback to 1) alter lecture notes in areas that students are finding problematic and 2) to improve my communication skills with students both in the classroom. This year based on student feedback I have introduced weekly office hours, where this time is totally dedicated to meeting students in a one-on-one basis. Continuous assessment by MCQ are conducted twice per semester in all my modules, I get a grade breakdown per question to determine if particular areas of the module are causing problems for the students. Dr. Tim McMahon of the Centre of Teaching and Learning observed one of my classes. He was highly complementary with teacher student and student-student interactions during paper presentations. He encouraged me to use this teaching strategy more often. This advice was implemented and has increased the amount of student-led learning in my modules.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

My modules are constructed with the specific aim of an effective uptake of learning outcomes by students. Varying methods of delivering content such as lectures, practicals, and student presentations are employed to achieve learning outcomes. Two continuous assessments on weeks 5 and 9 of each semester with a final end of semester exam has been the assessment strategy of my teaching approach. Analyses of MCQ results help determine which parts of the module are causing the students difficulty. Student learning is maximised through analytical projects that require both written and oral communication on completion of the projects. When designing a module I start with determining the learning outcomes I wish the students to achieve. Learning outcomes are generated from close research links with breeding companies and federations. Effectiveness of the content in achieving the learning outcomes is assessed through analysing exam results and student feedback. Continuous assessment allows students to monitor their individual progress and allows me to monitor the progress of the entire class. Once the results are given back to the class, I use this as opportunity to review the exams and rectify difficulties the class is having with module content. Students can have the opportunity to address their individual concerns during dedicated office hours. Presentation of research papers critiques in EDDA has been effective in improving students' oral communication skills. In Animal Breeding II breeding projects has been effective in improving students' ability to interpret complex data and writing communication skills. Invited speakers fom industry are used to provide students with information on best industry practice and the latest technologies employed by breeding companies. I have been involved in curriculum development through the development of a graduate level statistics module (Mixed Model Methodology). This module is block taught with using lectures (60%) and computer practicals (40%).

Developing as a Teacher

Constant efforts on improving knowledge and skills as a teacher have been made by analysing student feedback to ascertain if my delivery, communication skills, and lecture notes are sufficient in helping the students' achieve their learning outcomes. I have also been peer-reviewed by Dr. Tim McMahon from the Centre of Teaching and Learning and applied his suggestions to my teaching. In order to stay up to date on delivering animal breeding and statistics modules I attend the education seminars at the American Society of Animal Science annual meetings which discuss technologies and issues relating to teaching subjects in my area. In addition to these seminars I also achieved a graduate diploma in university teaching and learning (GDipUTL) from UCD in 2011 as part of my commitment to developing as teacher. The training provided in the areas of curriculum design, problem based learning, and improving teaching through practitioner research have been extremely valuable in my development as a teacher. As well as receiving mentorship in teaching from my colleagues, I have also contributed to the teaching support and development of my colleagues through weekly group discussion and also sharing with them principles discussed during the course of the GDipUTL.

Innovation & Leadership

Constant discussion and sharing of expriences with colleagues and research into teaching methods is vitally important in improving your skills as a teacher.
