Biography

<< Dr. Gordon Purvis is an environmental biologist with over 20 years of experience in teaching and research on biological issues relating to the agricultural environment. Currently, Dr. Purvis is the co-ordinator of two major Irish agri-environmental research projects funded by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Environmental Research Technological Development and Innovation (ERTDI) Programme 2000-2006, and the Irish Department of Agriculture and Food under the Research Stimulus Fund Programme (2006), and is an Irish participant in a multi-national EU-funded project seeking to develop an objective evaluation methodology for EU agri-environmental policy. Dr Purvis is a member of Ireland’s National Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (NPBR), was a member of this Platform’s Working Group responsible for defining a research agenda for Irish biodiversity research and acted as Chairperson for the breakout session on the Biodiversity Action Plan for Agriculture at the European Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) meeting in Killarney (20th –24th May 2004). Dr. Purvis is a specialised subject editor (Applied Entomology & Pest Control) for the Bulletin of Entomological Research. >>

Outreach Activities

Academic member of an external supervisory committee (including producer and consumer representatives) to oversee the progress of a focussed strategic research initiative funded by the Department of Agriculture via EU structural funds to assist the development of a new foliage production industry in SW Ireland.
Provision of pest identification and advice for agriculturalists and members of the general public.
Attended a meeting of experts held under the auspices of the European Platform for Bio-diversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) held in Brussels, Belgium in December, 2001 on the topic of ¿Scientific tools for bio-diversity conservation: monitoring, modelling and experiments¿. Participants at this meeting which was organised by the EU Commission prior to the implementation of the 6th Framework programme, were specially invited to Brussels to discuss their views on the future needs for bio-diversity research and to produce a strategic document outlining research priorities in this area
