Dr. Eileen Gibney has worked in the area of human nutrition since 1997 and has worked on several human intervention trials, including a hospital based clinical trial examining the effect of supplementation on biomarkers of colorectal cancer, and more recently examination of extracted polyphenols on markers of inflammation. Eileen also has considerable experience in collecting, collating and analysing dietary intake data, examining the dietary intake of 2500 students in the Trinity Student Study, and more recently involved in both the National Adult and Nutrition Survey (NANS) and National Phenotype Database (www.ucd.ie/JINGO). Eileen joined UCD as Lecturer in Nutrition and Genetics in 2005. She is currently researching many aspects of Food and Health and is a key member of the Institute of Food and Health, including a project examining the `Genetics of Food Choice' in Irish children and their parents (www.ucd.ie/foodandhealth/projects/geneticsofhealthyeating/). Eileen is involved in the EU project Food4me, examining the potential of personalised nutrition. Other areas of interest include functional effects of novel foods, and nutrient - epigenetics relationships. Eileen is Head of Programme for the new BSc Human Nutrition (2008).

| Her current research interests lie in the molecular aspect of nutrition and disease, an area of nutrition research called Nutrigenomics obtaining an MSc in Molecular Medicine from TCD in 2003. Dr Gibney has successfully obtained funding for a couple of research projects including: Examination of the effect of genotype (PTC/PROP) on fruit and vegetable intake in children - Sensory/Taste genetics (www.ucd.ie/foodandhealth/projects/geneticsofhealthyeating/) Eileen also has considerable experience in collecting, collating and analysing dietary intake data, examining the dietary intake of 2500 students in the Trinity Student Study, and more recently involved in both the National Adult and Nutrition Survey (NANS) and National Phenotype Database (www.ucd.ie/JINGO). Eileen is also a PI on the foo4me project. Food4me is ¿9M project involving an international consortium of researchers focused on personalised nutrition. The project runs from April 2011 to March 2015 and will examine all aspects of personalised nutrition including consumer understanding, business models and IT solutions for self assessment. The consortium will also conduct a large multicentre human intervention study examining the efficacy of personalised nutrition Other areas of interest include functional effects of novel foods, and the nutrient - epigenetic relationship. Eileen has recently established a working group on Epigenetics within UCD - CLS Epignetic Research Group, UCD (CERGU)

| My teaching interests lie in the area of nutrition and public health, with a particular interest in applied nutrition. The modules covered give a basic understanding of the biochemistry of nutrients and integration of metabolism. With my interest in Nutrition and Genetics and Nutrition and Public Health, it is envisaged that many more modules in these areas will be formed shortly. |
