Research Interests

The Equine Exercise Genomics Group uses functional and population genomic approaches to understand the genetic contributions to exercise adaptation and Thoroughbred athletic performance.

Current interests and research projects include:


1)  Genomic selection for exercise adaptation



2)  Genetic variation and racecourse performance



3)  Gene expression in skeletal muscle



4)  Genetic association studies using the Equine SNP50BeadChip



5)  Accurate phenotyping of exercise-relevant physiological traits for GWAS





Teaching Philosophy

At the heart of my teaching is to develop real understanding, empowering students to critically evaluate and utilise science in equine management. There is no greater satisfaction to me as a teacher than to see the ¿eureka¿ moment in a student¿s face when the pieces of knowledge come together.
