June 2010 - Present: Lecturer in Farm Landscape Ecology and Agri-Environmental Policy Jan 2007 - June 2010: Post Doctoral Researcher with the 'Agri Baseline' research group at University College Dublin. April 2005 - Dec 2006: Post Doctoral Researche with the 'AgBiota' research group at University College Dublin. Oct 2001 - March 2005: PhD as a Walsh Fellow based at Teagasc Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford. Sept 1997 - June 2001: B.Agr.Sc (Agriculture and Environmental Science) University College Dublin. |
| My research interests are in the implementation of international and EU agri-environmental policy obligations at local/national levels. In particular the Agri-environmental Regulation, Council Regulation No. (EEC) 2078/92 and subsequent Rural Development Regulation (Council Regulation (EC) No. 1257/1999), together with the CBD Associated Decision VII/3 ¿ Agricultural Biodiversity are very important international policy obligations which require a localised implementation and application of environmental knowledge to achieve their stated objectives. My particular research strength, is the application of my local ecological understanding of Irish agriculture, and the Irish farmed landscape, to international and EU agri-environmental policy obligations and legislation. This is extremely important, because an effective response to international obligations can only be achieved when the local farming context is fully understood, enabling the development of context-dependent solutions to internationally recognised issues. The research group, to which I am currently a significant contributor, is seeking to facilitate the implementation of an appropriate, scientifically-informed policy response to both national and international drivers of change in Irish agriculture including the potential effects of global warming. Co-author together with Dr's Gordon Purvis, Annette Anderson and Barry McMahon of the Farmland Ecology Research Group, UCD and Dr Alvin Helden, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge of 'Agri-Baseline' Research Project, funded by the Department of Agriculture and Food RSFP, total award to UCD ¿1,024,602 (2006). Co-author together with Dr's John Finn and Daire O hÚallachain, Teagasc, Johnstown Castle and Dr Simon Harrison, University College Cork of 'An Evaluation of Existing and Potential Measures to Sustain an Increased Biodiversity and Water Quality on Irish Farms' funded by the Department of Agriculture and Food RSFP, total award of ¿650,000.
