Biography

Dr. Paul Murphy is a soil scientist with research interests in soil nutrient and C cycling and solutions to environmental problems in agricultural and forestry resource management, particularly relating to soil and nutrient management practices, water quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Murphy has extensive international experience in environmental issues related to soil management in agriculture and forestry and over 25 scientific publications in this field.
Dr. Murphy did a B.A. in Natural Sciences at Trinity College Dublin (1995-1999), specializing in Geology. He then completed a M.Sc. in Applied Environmental Geoscience at the Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany (1999-2001), where he first became involved in the application of soil science to agri-environmental issues. He then did a Ph.D. in Environmental Soil Science at Queen¿s University Belfast (2001-2004) investigating the effect of lime and gypsum on phosphorus loss from agricultural soils to water. 
Dr. Murphy was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management, University of New Brunswick, Canada from 2005 to 2008 where he worked on GIS applications to improve forest operations planning through improved geospatial soil information. He then spent 5 years (2008-2013) as a researcher with Teagasc (the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority), investigating nutrient management strategies to improve nutrient use efficiency and minimize losses to water and air in Irish agricultural production systems, including working on the DAFM-funded Agricultural Catchments Programme and Soiled Water Project and the INTERREG-funded DAIRYMAN project. 
Dr. Murphy joined the Environment and Sustainable Resource Management Section of the School of Agriculture and Food Science at UCD in October 2013. He is currently coordinating the modules AESC 30230 Climate Carbon and Soil and AESC 40140 Agri-Environmental Nutrient Management and contributing teaching to a range of modules, most notably AESC 20060 Soil Science Basics and AESC 30220 Soil Science Applications. Dr. Murphy will be taking over as director of the M.Sc.(Agr.) in Environmental Resource Management from 2014. He is currently establishing a research programme at UCD and is PI of the UCD Seed-funded Sustainable Soils project.

Dr. Murphy's research interests include:
  • Soil nutrient and C cycling and management to improve the sustainability of production systems.
  • Solutions to environmental problems in agricultural and forestry resource management, particularly relating to soil management practices, water quality and greenhouse gas emissions. 
  • Novel treatment and recycling systems for organic wastes.
  • Novel soil amendments to improve nutrient use efficiency and minimize losses to the environment.
  • Catchment/watershed and landscape management.
  • Environmental hydrogeochemistry, nutrient cycle modelling and geospatial modeling of soil processes and properties (soil-landscape modeling).
  • Environmental applications of GIS.
