I graduated from UCD in 2001 with a first class honours degree in Animal Science and later with a Ph.D in 2005. Following a short period involved in the organization of the International Grassland Congress hosted in Dublin in 2005 I joined the lecturing staff in UCD where I lecture in sheep husbandry and ruminant nutrition. My main areas of research are; reduction of enteric methane emissions by ruminants; increasing nitrogen capture in the rumen; fatty acid profiles in perennial ryegrass varieties; grazing management for spring calving dairy herds and the use of a rumen simulation system to model the effects of various dietary additives on rumen function. Additionally I am carrying out research in the areas of late pregnancy and early lactation nutrition of the ewe. I am leading ongoing Nationally funded research projects aimed an understanding the mechanisms of enteric methane production (RSF 06 361) and mitigation (SFI 09/RFP/GEN2346) and enhancing the nutritional quality of grass (RSF 06 330) in addition to collaborating on many other projects. Collaborators include colleagues at the Teagasc Research Centres at Moorepark, Grange and Oakpark as well as colleagues at the AFBI in Hillsborough, NI, The University of Aberystwyth, Wales and AgResearch, New Zealand. |
