Biography

I have been reappointed as the Fulbright Ambassador for UCD for a second year. I currently lecture in the School of Archaeology and in Beijing-Dublin International College (BDIC). I am based in Beijing, for the spring semester, where I instruct over 340 students. My current module "Ireland: Landscape, Heritage and Culture" is a broad survey course in Irish archaeology, history, politics and literature. While the students learn about Irish culture, they also benefit from acquiring a range of transferable skills, including adeptness in descriptive expression, analytical thought, visual presentation and theoretical appraisal.

In UCD I am delighted to introduce my Roman architectural module for the first time in the School of Archaeology.

I originally trained as an archaeologist at UCD, graduating with my BA in 1994, and went on to study Classics for my MA, again at UCD. I completed my PhD with the School of Classics at Trinity College Dublin. As a licenced archaeologist, I have been active in the field for over twenty years and have directed large-scale excavations and projects in Ireland, Greece and Jordan. I surveyed the island of Crete mapping the Roman aqueducts and bathhouses for my doctoral thesis - I am currently editing this work to publish in two books.

I am currently working on the publication of a Roman bath at Myrtos in Crete, by kind invite of Gerald Cadogan (British School at Athens). Recently, I co-directed The Leukos & Sokastro Survey Projects in Karpathos (investigating an Early Byzantine port and a Middle Byzantine kastro).

I am an experienced educator and public speaker, having lectured at University College Dublin (in both the Schools of Classics and Archaeology), NUI Galway, Trinity College, Dublin, and Harvard University (as a Teaching Fellow). While Fulbright Fellow in the Department of the Classics at Harvard, I was awarded a CUE teaching distinction (by the Derek Bok Center). I have taught Ancient Greek language (beginners to advanced) for over five years and am as happy leafing through ancient texts as I am digging in the dirt.

In 2015/16 I was invited to give public talks on Greek funerary practices at the Capital Normal University, Beijing, and also delivered the opening address for The Ninth SEIS Postgraduate Forum & The Irish Studies Network Postgraduate Forum at Beiwei University. In 2016/17 I was invited to speak at Peking University on 'Memory as Architectural Construct', while I also presented at the 12th International Congress of Cretan Studies and for the Classical Association of Ireland.
