Biography

I am an archaeologist who has worked primarily on later prehistory in Northwest Europe and Southeast Asia. I am currently co-directing an excavation and field training project in Palawan Island, the Philippines, jointly with the Archaeological Studies Program in UP Diliman and the National Museum of the Philippines. I am also currently working on projects based in Laos, Malaysian Borneo, Scotland and Ireland. In addition to field research, I work as a geoarchaeologist with a specialisation in soil micromorphological study of features and buried soils.

My teaching experience includes: geoarchaeology, landscape archaeology, environmental archaeology, the later prehistory of Britain, Southeast and East Asian archaeology, archaeological project management, archaeological fieldwork.

I am currently the chair of the organising committee for the 14th international European Association of Southeast Asian Archaeologists, which will be held in Sept 2012 in Dublin at Dublin Castle and the Chester Beatty Library. Please see our website for more information: EurASEAA14

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

To encourage and enable students to pursue their goals through example, exploration, participation in and engagement with the subject. Engaging with knowledge-base, theory and methods through practice brings the most satisfying and profound learning, because it stimulates curiosity, argument and innovation.

Enhancement of Teaching

In 2004 I completed the Post-graduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (University of Oxford), researching field-based learning in undergraduates and how mature students learn through practice. While at Oxford I completed a number of training courses in teaching, learning and assessment styles, aims and effectiveness, and was involved in teaching peer-review. At UCD I have taught in small- and large-group, field- and laboratory-based and lecture hall situations, and have brought learning through practice into most of my courses. As Teaching and Learning officer for three years, I participated in university seminars and workshops on enhancing learning at the university, which introduced me to current and desired practice at UCD; I have particularly engaged with ideas discussed on small-group learning in large groups (e.g. in ARCH20110), and experiential learning. Based on feedback, I was greatly involved in the re-organisation of archaeology degrees and course offerings, and brought my international research experience into our teaching, using case studies from across the globe, developing part-modules on global archaeology, and new courses (e.g. Southeast and East Asian Archaeology). My involvement in research field training of postgraduate students from Southeast Asia, Europe and the USA, through my project in the Philippines, and field training of national museum staff in Laos, along with my past professional life, have enhanced my understanding of practice and community education in the global heritage sector; drawing on this experience has, I believe, made my teaching at UCD more relevant regarding archaeology both outside and inside 'the academy'.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

As Teaching and Learning officer in Archaeology from 2007-2010 I played a lead role in the review of undergraduate archaeology degrees and diplomas, partly in response to creating the new BSc in Archaeology and Geology (for which I have been the archaeology lead since 2007), partly in relation to the flattening of Level 2 in the College of Arts & Celtic Studies, and also partly in response to peer review of our degrees (internal departmental review, external assessment exercise). As a School, we reduced our overall course offerings, while enhancing the content of remaining courses with the aims of: bringing more practice and research into our teaching, making our teaching more internationally relevant and informed, and ensuring learning progression within and between the three years of our degrees. We also informally reviewed students at entry- and exit-levels, soliciting information on why students choose archaeology, why they stay in archaeology, and where they go when they complete our degree; as part of this we established a staff-student liaison committee, on which I serve. This is ongoing research, with the aim of further enhancing student learning in archaeology; we have already reviewed issues of developing transferable skills and have established degree pathways to encourage students to experience a range of subjects within our multidisciplinary study area. The BSc in Archaeology and Geology was created directly out of my position at UCD. Where more than one geoarchaeologist is on staff, universities have created successful programmes in this field (e.g. Reading, Sheffield); due to teaching restrictions we have instead created a joint degree which gives students the core courses in both fields, along with two courses aiming to bring the two disciplines together. We are reviewing ways to develop an MA/MSc in this field or in Archaeological Sciences, to directly compete with UK institutions.

Developing as a Teacher

The largest measurable contribution to this was my completion of the Post-graduate Diploma in Higher Education Learning and Teaching (University of Oxford 2002-4). This course covered aspects ranging from teaching and learning theory, course and programme development, international research in assessment and learning, through to interacting with individual students. Research for my final project on how undergraduates learn in fieldschools, focusing on experiential learning, practice and problem-based learning, small group learning, and the importance of the social experience of learning, has greatly influenced my teaching philosophy. At UCD I have attended seminars on similar issues, focusing on the particulars of this university, its degree structures and its students, and has greatly enhanced the more theoretical nature of the diploma by adding working practice, as well as anchoring my experience as Teaching and Learning officer (2007-2010). The increased success of my Asian projects, which include training and supervising post-graduate students from all over Asia, Europe and the USA, and museum professionals in Asia has enhanced my UCD teaching, through increased awareness of student-led learning outcomes, different systems of practice, and public engagement, and has led me to develop a course in SE & E Asian Archaeology (ARCH30230).

Innovation & Leadership

I was Teaching and Learning Officer during a time of great change in our programmes, and am the lead on the joint Archaeology-Geology BSc, and in developing environmental archaeology courses at UCD. I also focus on our international profile through research, postgraduate exchange, expanding international archaeology teaching, and hosting the EurASEAA 14 international conference, aiming to develop our reputation as a centre for international archaeological study and research, which I will pursue further in my current role as International Officer.
