Biography

I undertook my BA (2001-2004) and M.Litt. (2004-2006) at the National University of Ireland (Galway), with the two-year research-based Masters researching the Mesolithic and Early Neolithic in the west of Ireland.

For my PhD (2006-2010) at University College Dublin I researched quartz (lithic) technology in Ireland using Mesolithic and Neolithic case studies from Ireland (Belderrig) and Northern Ireland (Thornhill). This project used experimental archaeology to develop frameworks for understanding prehistoric quartz tool manufacture.

Following my PhD, in 2011 I moved to the University of Barcelona to undertake a postdoctoral fellowship (2011-2013), researching 'flint alternatives' - specifically quartz and rhyolite - in the Upper Palaeolithic (Magdalenian) in NE Iberia. This project involved the development of my quartz analytical framework formulated during my PhD: I applied and refined my initial framework in the context of Iberian Upper Palaeolithic lithic traditions by undertaking further knapping experiments as well as geological prospection. This project expanded on my previous research by also investigating the manufacture of rhyolite artefacts through experimental archaeology.

From 2013-2015 I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Montreal, researching flaked stone tool raw material provenancing in prehistoric Ireland. This project focused on chert from NW Ireland with the analyses including macroscopic, non-destructive geochemical (ED-XRF), and thin section analysis. The over 400 geological hand samples of chert collected during the project form the basis of a 'lithoteque' - reference collection - of flaked stone tool raw materials from Ireland, with the reference collection physically housed at the UCD School of Archaeology. The physical collection will soon be complimented by an online database of the reference collection.

I am currently (2015-2017) a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University College Dublin, again researching flaked stone tool raw material provenancing in prehistoric Ireland. This project is a continuation and expansion of my previous project at the University of Montreal. The chert provenancing component is focusing on the Cretaceous chert ('Antrim flint') from Ireland, and is using the same suite of analyses; the excavation component is focusing on three chert outcrop groups surveyed during the previous project.
