Biography:

Emmett Scanlon participates and engages widely in architecture in Ireland and his personal practice includes the design and construction of buildings, academic research, teaching architecture, the development of national policy in architecture and architectural criticism. He graduated from University College Dublin with a BArch degree in 1997 and with an MArchSc degree in 2001. He has been teaching in U.C.D. Architecture since 1999 and was appointed Lecturer in Architecture in 2006 is a member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland since 2000 and is accredited in Architectural Conservation by the R.I.A.I.

Emmett joined Grafton Architects in 1997, and was Project Director there from 2003-2006. Emmett worked on a variety of projects including the Solstice Meath Arts Centre, offices in Dublin City University, the North Kildare Educate Together School, new offices at Merrion Row, Dublin and Housing and Offices in Bjorvika, Oslo, Norway. He was part of the competition winning team for the new faculty building for Universita Luigi Bocconi, Milan, Italy, which won the inaugural World Building of the Year Award in 2008.

Since establishing CASTarchitecture, Emmett has worked closely with public and private clients across a variety of projects and scales of work. Emmett has over 15 years experience in construction and is skilled at working with clients, collaborators and contractors, often within restricted budgets and timeframes. Currently Emmett is designing an exhibition pavilion for the Irish EU Presidency 2013 for PIVOT Dublin.

In 2006, Emmett was appointed Architectural Adviser to the Arts Council. Emmett was reappointed in 2011 following an open tender. Having worked with the Arts Council to deliver a research study into Public Engagement in Architecture, Emmett was involved in the development of the Engaging with Architecture Scheme in 2010, in partnership with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaelteacht, under the auspices of the Government Policy on Architecture. This scheme funds projects which specifically aim to bring architecture to an audience in Ireland, is the first of its kind in Ireland and is now in its third year. Emmett is continuing to develop public engagement initiatives in his role as Adviser and is currently working on the development of an Engagement in Architecture handbook in partnership with the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland.

Emmett continues to carry out independent academic research, is currently research lead on a new national study into Research in Architecture in Ireland, and he recently co-wrote a paper for the Royal Irish Academy on the phenomena of the contemporary house extension in Dublin.

Emmett is the Irish correspondent for A10, the journal for New European Architecture, and a regular contributor to national and international magazines and journals.

Teaching Philosophy

Since 1999 I have been actively involved in the Undergraduate teaching program in architecture. I am particularly interested in the potential discussions that can occur across the various streams of education in architecture and have taught Design Studio, History and Theory of Architecture and Design Technology. I have taught for a number of years as Studio Tutor at both BscArch and BArch thesis level. I am currently studio co-ordinator and Design Tutor of the 4th year architecture.
