Biography

In September 2008, I took up the position of Professor of Architecture at UCD, and from September 2009 am also Dean of Architecture.

With Nathalie Weadick of the Irish Architecture Foundation, I curated Ireland's exhbition at the 2008 Venice Biennale, The Lives of Spaces. The exhibition is currently touring Ireland and Britain.

My current research activity has two main aspects - an ongoing series of papers on photography, space and the self and a major Royal Irish Academy project, the Art and Architecture of Ireland, a five volume work published by Yale University Press in 2014. I am co-editor with Rolf Loeber of volume 4, Architecture in Ireland 1600 - 2000.

Research

Research Interests

* The relationship of consciousness and space
* Photography, of built space and landscape
* The conception, experience and representation of space in post-war Europe
* The culture of architecture in Ireland

Current Research Interests

The Construction of Self and the Construction of Space
Drawing on a wide range of work within the rapidly expanding field of consciousness studies, and based on the fundamental premise that the self is a ¿locative system', this research seeks new ways to explain the means by which we design, construct and experience space. The research involves the detailed examination of particular architects' work to discover how a particular conception of space and self is manifest in their work. Allied with this are a series of investigations into how the interdependent relationship of self and space is depicted in various art forms- particularly literature, cinema and photography. This work has already produced a number of papers, and is currently being developed into a book which examines the ¿spatial self' at an expanding series of scales, from the internal ¿space' of the mind - the space between our ears - to the spaces of the room, the house, the city and the landscape.

Photographs of Buildings, Cities and Landscapes
This is an emerging area of research examining how the photograph can be used to depict or suggest relationships between human beings and their environments. This research has already produced a series of papers and essays on figures including Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander and Philip Lorca-diCorcia. It is intended to gather these into a publication. A new teaching module in the subject is also being established

The Culture of Architecture in Ireland
Irish architectural culture - the theories and practices which underpin the discipline - has been the subject of very little serious or sustained critical attention. And yet, in order to flourish, any culture needs to be subject to detailed analysis, critique and explanation. Through an ongoing series of review essays, as well as historical research and theoretical enquiry, I have been engaged in providing the academic underpinning to the architectural discipline as it becomes ever more complex and demanding. This work is also directed towards finding ways in which design and theoretical enquiry, research and practice, can develop together.

I am co-editor, with Rolf Loeber, of the Architecture Volume in the RIA/Yale University Press Art and Architecture of Ireland project
