Biography

Dr Elizabeth Shotton is currently Director of Research, Innovation and Impact in the UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy. She teaches in construction technology and design studio, with an emphasis on sustainable building and development, at both undergraduate and graduate level. She holds undergraduate degrees in Commerce and Architecture as well as a PhD in Architecture from UCD. In addition to teaching architecture, first at the University of British Columbia before being appointed at UCD in 2003, she was active in architectural practice from 1988 to 2006 and continues to maintain her professional registration in Canada.

Elizabeth's research interests are closely linked to teaching, with a focus on the sustainable use of material resources through advances in materials, construction technologies and design processes. She is currently involved in an national research collaboration, CASWOOD, a project led by the University of Limerick, to develop a model to assess the environmental impact of the cascade effect in wood flow in Ireland. Elizabeth also works in the field of construction history and is currently working on an Irish Research Council funded project Minor Harbours, which is examining the evolution of maritime engineering in small harbours along the east coast of Ireland from the seventeenth century to the present.

Research

Research Interests

Research interests focus on the sustainable use of material resources through advances in materials, building technologies and design processes.

Minor Harbours of Ireland 2015-2017
The minor harbour structures along Ireland's coastline are significant infrastructural systems, which have contributed to local and national Irish culture. These minor harbours represent a considerable source of information, many having originated through local efforts only to be later modified through government works in the 19th and 20th centuries. Of the 94 structures identified on the east coast by the Underwater Archaeological Unit of the DAHG (1999) there are 83 minor structures for which limited documentation exists. The danger posed to these structures from deterioration and rising sea levels is increasing and it is imperative to create accurate records to support a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of maritime engineering in Ireland. This pilot study is of a smaller sample (6) of these harbours, in varying geomorphological conditions and of various forms, to establish an appropriate protocol for recording these structures using LiDAR. The study will serve to identify issues to be addressed to ensure the information captured is both complete and as widely transportable to alternative formats as possible for ease of access to a broader range of users. Coupled with historical and archival research, the final data sets will provide a useful resource for the appropriate management and conservation of these structures.

CASWOOD: Economic and Environmental Mapping of Cascade Use of Wood 2014-2016
Previous models of carbon storage in forest ecosystems and harvested wood products have developed independently, as have data on biomass and economic measures of the forest resource-based industry in Ireland. Lacking is a coherent picture of the interaction and interdependence of these various sectors. The CASWOOD model will merge these data streams and supplement with data on the reuse of wood resources to provide a holistic profile of the current position of carbon storage and biomass potential. This will be used to test hypothetical changes to the product stream to establish the parameters influencing the environmental and economic optimisation of forest and forest-based products in Ireland.
The project is conducted in conjunction with University of Limerick and involves significant liaison between the project partners.

WoodWeldiT 2010-present
The ambition of the WoodWeld project is the adaptation and application of a new weather and water resistant form of wood welding to rotational dowel welded connections for construction products and structural engineering applications. Collaborative research project between School of Architecture, School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering and School of Mechanical Engineering at UCD; École Nationale Supérieure Des Technologies et Industries Du Bois, Université Henri Poincaré, France.

Grammatical Evolution, Parametric Design & Rapid Prototyping 2007-present
The collaborative project was formed between NCRA/CASL UCD and the School of Architecture, Landscape & Civil Engineering in 2007 to investigate the potential of a form of evolutionary computation, grammatical evolution (GE), combined with shape grammars to develop an evolutionary form-generation platform. This evolutionary approach to design will support a more critical and informed use of local resources within the building industry by structuring closer links between the conceptual design process and the material/environmental imperatives.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

An educational context which engenders a number of perceived solutions contributes to degree of conflict and elevates curiosity (Berlyne as qtd. in Mittman & Terrell 1964). Thus effective teaching, rather than offering fixed knowledge, encourages alternative solutions and opportunities to experiment, particularly in a tactile manner.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

In my role as Coordinator of the MArch Technology Programme I play a substantial role in accreditation reviews in Architecture, and, due to the offering of technology modules to students of Civil Engineering, have also contributed to accreditation reviews of the Civil Engineering programmes. As Chair of the Self-Assessment Committee I lead a recent quality assessment of the teaching across the newly formed School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, which served to identify correlations between module offerings among the four disciplines to be rationalized and improved to enhance interdisciplinary learning. During the Self-assessment process the Committee worked with the Curriculum Review Committee in relation to feedback from practitioners, government bodies and other employers in addition to recent graduates, to better assess the learning outcomes achieved by the range of programmes offered, which will inform the Quality Improvement Plan for the School.

Developing as a Teacher

I have maintained an active and substantial participation in CPD through the UCD Teaching & Learning Unit, including: Programme Design for Graduate Taught Programmes; Using Blackboard to Peer Review Essays; Micro Lectures for Learning; Assessment Strategies to Motivate Student Learning, as well as attending a week long Dublin ELearning Summer School [2014], which was enlightening regarding the digital material available and how to structure online support sessions. I also attended several classes of the UCD/TCD Research Supervisor Support & Development Programme [2015], which influenced my supervision of graduate students. My participation on the University Assessment Appeals Committee has had the most substantial impact on my pedagogy, seeing the consequences of inadequate teaching and assessment as well as learning about novel approaches from the very committed teachers on the committee. This has influenced the clarity of structure in my modules, to ensure students fully appreciate the rationale for what they are intended to learn, how they will be learning, and how they will be assessed. Clarity of intentions and transparency in the process are critical to a student¿s understanding, experience and welfare regardless of the teaching methods employed or the subject matter.

Innovation & Leadership

My commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration as the only means to create a more holistic built environment led to innovations in the teaching curriculum through the introduction of interdisciplinary research-led technology modules and development of an interdisciplinary postgraduate studio shared between the MArchSc post-professional degrees.
