Biography

Dr. Shahumyan has over 14 years experience specialising in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geo-spatial analysis and modelling, data analysis and data management with a focus on land use, urban modelling, spatial planning, healthcare, environment, and spatial decision supporting systems. He has a Master degree in Applied Mathematics and a PhD in Engineering. From 2001 to 2004 Dr Shahumyan did his first post-doctoral research on statistical modelling at the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems of National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Meanwhile, he expanded his career as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Cambridge visiting the Centre of Applied Medical Statistics three times between 2002 and 2005.

Aiming to get more practical experience in policy analysis and working with stakeholders in 2004 Dr Shahumyan moved to consultancy work in international projects supporting government institutions in Armenia. Here he made acknowledged contributions to the development of emerging GIS technologies in Armenia, particularly in state organisations such as the Hydro-Meteorological Service, Environmental Impact Monitoring Centre and Ministry of Health of Armenia.

In 2008 Dr Shahumyan joined University College Dublin (UCD) as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Urban Environment Project  His research at UCD involves land use modelling, scenario generation and analysis for future regional development, spatial and statistical analyses informing decision makers. A successful example of generating innovative modelling solutions to real world problems was achieved in a recent application of the MOLAND model, which formed an important part of the latest review of the Regional Planning Guidelines published by Dublin & Mid East Regional Authorities in 2010.

In 2010, Dr Shahumyan further expanded his experience as a participant of the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme research programme Land Use Modelling and Analysis Network (LUMAN). Within the scope of this program, he visited New Zealand Landcare Research, where he became familiar with the New Zealand experience on integrated land use modelling and ways of effectively collaborating with stakeholders.

In 2014 Dr. Shahumyan has been awarded a Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowship by Research Executive Agency of European Commission. As a result he has moved to University of Maryland to carry on his research project GeoSInPo. In the USA his work was focused on integration of different models at the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education.  After successful completion the outgoing phase of his project, Harut has returned to University College Dublin in August 2016 and currently working on model integration for Greater Dublin Region.

Dr Shahumyan has presented his research results at 19 international conferences, in more than 25 research papers and in 2 book chapters.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on the view of applying practical examples and problem solving tasks to make the learning process easy and interesting for students. Connection of the topic with real life situations increases the potential of applying the acquired knowledge and skills in future.

Developing as a Teacher

Dr. Shahumyan's teaching experience goes back to 1995, when he conducted computer skills courses for general public in Armenia. Later he designed and run several courses on computer skills, data management, data analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for government officials and decision makers. After joining to UCD in 2008 Dr. Shahumyan has developed and run different short term GIS courses for students, researchers and staff. He was the coordinator and the lecturer of the Geographical Information Systems for Policy and Planning (PEP40100) module for post-graduate students at UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy in 2014. As a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Maryland Harut taught postgraduate students the course named Recent Developments in Urban Studies: Intermediate Geographic Information Systems (URSP688M).
