Biography

Dr. Paula Russell is a graduate of Geography and Sociology, from Trinity College, Dublin and is a qualified planner having graduated from the Master of Regional and Urban Planning Programme (MRUP) in UCD in 1993. She completed her PhD in Regional and Urban Planning in 2002. Paula worked as a research associate and project co-ordinator in both the Services Industries Research Centre and the Environmental Institute in UCD and was an Assistant lecturer in the Department of Regional and Urban Planning in UCD before being appointed as a Lecturer in October 2001. Paula lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in the following areas: History and Theory of Planning, Research Methods and the Role of Community in Planning.Paula's main area of research relates to the role of civil society in the planning process, looking at issues of engagement and influence.  She has a broad interest in urban policy issues and is a member of the board of the European Urban Research Association (EURA).

Research

Research Interests

Paula's main research interests are in the broad area of community and governance. A particular focus of much of her research is the interface between civil society and the policy process. Other interests include the exploration of innovative approaches to managing land use.


Paula is currently engaged in research on community engagement and resilience in urban neighbourhoods which are suffering the effects of the economic crisis. With Geography colleague Niamh Moore she has explored children and young people's participation in the Irish planning system.

She has completed research in the following areas: Community involvement in urban regeneration; the role of active citizens in neighbourhood development; the contested nature of rural development; participation, citizen capacity and the regeneration of social housing; social capital and civic engagement in rural areas; multifunctional intensive landuse and; the exploration of the potential of market based instruments in landuse planning. This research has been funded with research grants from the Royal Irish Academy Third Sector Research Programme, the Environmental Protection Agency and INTERREG IIIC
