Biography

Paul is a lecturer in UCD School of Architecture and a Principal Investigator with the UCD Earth Institute. He is actively engaged in teaching, research and postgraduate supervision in the areas of daylight, sustainable design and building performance.

On completing his Degree in Mechanical Engineering he joined Ove Arup & Partners in London where he worked on a range of high profile projects. After developing an interest in sustainable buildings, he completed his MSc in 'Energy Conservation and the Environment' at Cranfield University, UK. From there he joined the UCD Energy Research Group where he was involved in a wide range of both EU supported research and specialist consultancy.

Paul's main research interest is in the relative relationship between the spectral and temporal properties of unaltered external daylight and that inside designed spaces as observed, or experienced, by the occupant. In addition to established daylight science, Paul is also interested in the role of weather (as opposed to climate) and of psychophysics in developing a fuller understanding of the observers experience of and response to natural light.
