Biography

Conor Lucey is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design and of UCD. Prior to joining the staff in the School of Art History and Cultural Policy in 2016 he was awarded postdoctoral fellowships from the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. Most recently he was recipient of a prestigious three-year 'Elevate' fellowship, granted by the Irish Research Council and jointly funded by the Irish government and the EU (Marie Curie Actions): two years were spent at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (2013-15), and the final year at Trinity College Dublin (2015-16). The principal outcome of this research is a new monograph, entitled Building Reputations: architecture and the artisan, 1750-1830, which is forthcoming from Manchester University Press and has received funding from the National University of Ireland and the SAH/Mellon Author Award of the Society of Architectural Historians.

Dr Lucey is an architectural historian with interests in a number of related fields, including urban domestic architecture of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic world; the contested relationship between architectural design and building production; neoclassicism and print culture; and the decorative interior in Europe, 1660-1840. His first book, The Stapleton Collection: designs for the Irish neoclassical interior (2007) was published by Churchill House Press for the National Library of Ireland and he curated an accompanying exhibition, 'Decorating the Georgian Interior', for the Irish Architectural Archive. He is co-editor of Decorative Plasterwork in Ireland and Europe: ornament and the early modern interior (2012), and contributed essays to two volumes of the Art and Architecture of Ireland series published by Yale University Press (2014). Recent articles have appeared in international peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, The Burlington Magazine, and Architectural History. Much of this research has been funded by bursaries from the Paul Mellon Center for Studies in British Art, the Royal Irish Academy and other sources. Forthcoming projects include a thematic essay on design in A Cultural History of Interiors in the Age of Enlightenment, part of the 'Cultural Histories' series published by Bloomsbury Academic and scheduled for 2019.

A regular speaker at major international conferences devoted to art, architectural and urban histories, Dr Lucey sits on the editorial board of Irish Architectural and Decorative Studies (having served as editor-in-chief between 2010-14), and has acted as a reader/peer-reviewer for a number of academic journals including Architectural Histories and Home Cultures. President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, and member of the Irish Committee of Historical Sciences, Dr Lucey also contributes to a wide range of public outreach programmes, including lectures, talks and tours for a variety of national cultural and heritage institutions.
