Biography

I graduated from the University of Wales, Bangor in 1989 and worked for 12 months at the Grassland Research Institute in Berkshire, UK. I started my PhD in the Department of Zoology, Unversity of Oxford in 1990 and graduated in 1993 before beginning a research career at the University of York. After a couple more post docs in Tokyo, Japan and Birmingham, UK, I joined the staff of the then Zoology Department at UCD in 2002. I have always been interested in entomology and my work has focussed on one group of insects, the aphids, which are on the one hand fascinating, in terms of their life histories and reproductive strategies, and on the other economically important because of the damage they inflict in agriculture. Working with plant-feeding insects bridges the gap between the traditional views of Zoology and Botany and as such my research group (Insect Ecophysiology) has expertise in aphid nutrition and feeding and plant responses to aphid damage.

Teaching Philosophy

Knowledge and enthusiasm is the key to capturing the attention of students and encouraging a 'love of learning' that supersedes preconceived ideas of degree topics and subject matter. If we as practitioners don't follow this philosophy, then why should we expect our students to be any different?

Enhancement of Teaching

Students need reminding of the context of their learning to place material in a structured framework, with or without the use of textbooks, and the ability to select core material is a key skill that increases student motivation by not swamping them with irrelevant facts. I select material carefully to ensure that lectures and practicals are complementary and remind students that the practical material will reinforce the theory from lectures. I use powerpoint extensively to incorporate videos and still images that bring the topic to life. In particular, seeing identical figures on screen to the textbook reassures the students that they can revisit the material in the future. Maintaining student attention throughout a lecture is a difficult task, but good preparation is the key and I like to spend at least 20 minutes ensuring that I am familiar with delivery of the material. With practice and in consultation with colleagues I am confident that I set the correct pace so that students can keep up but are not bored into distraction. I will frequently stop and ask if anyone needs clarification or has a question, which helps to regain attention and overcomes the natural reticence of students to engage. Feedback scores indicate significant student satisfaction with all my modules - the mean scores (3.5 or higher) are consistently above equivalent modules within the degree programme or SBES, and the relatively low scores for the new module BIOL10090 are being addressed this year largely through improvements in module organisation.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I play a strong role in the development of curricula at both the module and programme level. I interact with my peers regularly through both informal coffee meetings and more formal programme meetings to consider new developments in the field that should be introduced to our undergraduates. There is always a trade-off - we cannot simply keep on adding new material to our courses, and the decision on what to drop from the programme is just as important and often harder to take. On a more personal level, I reflect on my own teaching and curricula regularly, particularly at the beginning and end of a module when new material might be considered or something that didn't work might be dropped, and the process of marking and collating of grades is an ideal opportunity to judge understanding by individual students and the class as a whole. Were the learning objectives reached? Did the majority of students understand the topic? What could be improved next time? I have been responsible for the development and coordination of two new modules: BIOL10090 Organisms and Environment and ZOOL40030 Insect-Plant Interactions. BIOL10090 involves formal lectures and practical sessions, but also a self-directed component involving a visit to Dublin Zoo (subsidised by the school) and ZOOL40030 is constantly updated through primary literature and my own research activities. I have taken over the coordinating responsibilities for ZOOL30050 Diversity of Invertebrates and ZOOL10010 Medical Zoology. Both of these required significant updating in both the lecture content and the practical content including the creation of dedicated laboratory manuals. As an active researcher and life-long learner I am constantly aware of topics in my own research that might be useful in explaining difficult concepts or that might supplement classic experiments in the literature.

Developing as a Teacher

Before joining the staff at UCD, I attended teaching and learning courses in demonstrating and tutorial techniques at the University of Oxford and the University of York. On arrival at UCD, I attended the in house induction process for lecturers. I am constantly seeking any opportunity to learn how to improve my teaching. I seek informal advice from both colleagues and students, particularly during residential field courses that provide the ideal environment for such discussions. I also make careful use of the feedback provided by students in lecturer evaluations and endeavour to illustrate the changes implemented as a result of previous feedback to new cohorts of students.

Innovation & Leadership

I have made significant contributions to T&L in SBES through provision of new and redesign of existing modules, and have provided leadership in the development of Zoology (particularly stage 2) into one of the most popular undergraduate programmes at UCD. I endeavour to enhance student learning through new approaches to teaching and assessment. I use multi-media where appropriate (including video, animations, and colour images), material is available via Blackboard, and self-directed learning is encouraged through web assignments and continual assessments.
