Biography

As a research scientist, my main goal is to understand the workings of natural ecosystems, particularly peatlands to ultimately provide guidance to a wide range of stakeholders: policy makers, industry, natural resource manager and the general public. As an educator, my philosophy is to give students the confidence to make the changes they want to see in the world by transferring the scientific knowledge into action.

Researcher/PI

Over the past 20 years, my work as a peatland scientist has primarily aimed at investigating environmental changes and their impacts on ecosystem dynamics such as biogeochemical cycles and in particular plant-soil-atmosphere interactions. Practicing what I teach, I believe it is my role to help transferring my expertise into action that promotes sustainable practices.

Current research interests:
-management of peatlands and organic soils for the mitigation and adaptation to climate change and for biodiversity
-carbon stocks, greenhouse gas and aquatic fluxes from peatland ecosystems
-peatland restoration and conservation
-peatland forestry and after-use of cutaway peatlands
-environmental monitoring and water quality
-EIA, SEA and AA (assessment of impacts on protected areas)

Director MSc Global Change: Ecosystem Science and Policy

International MSc Programme in English, taught in both UCD and Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Germany); Policy-relevant scientific evidence is that core philosophy of this degree aiming to give graduates skills to bridge the gap between science and policy. It has a unique work placement module giving students high employability.

Research

Research Interests

My general research interest is the impact of global change on ecosystem processes and ecosystem services, in particular peatlands and various land uses on organic soils. I see my role as transferring this expertise into action that promotes sustainable practices.

I have investigated greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands and organic soils with the aim to develop emission factors to report to the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol as well as evaluate mitigation activities (re-wetting to reduce carbon emissions) and assess their full socio-economic impacts. (www.ucd.ie/neros)
I am also researching the impact of climate change and extreme events on Irish peatlands.  (www.ucd.ie/vapor)

I am currently leading a nation-wide EPA research project  investigating peatland properties influencing greenhouse gas emissions and removals. (www.ucd.ie/auger)
