Biography

Geraldine Butler (BA (Mod) 1984, PhD 1989) is Professor of Genetics in the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, and a Principal Investigator in the Conway Institute. Her group studies factors controlling virulence in pathogenic fungi, in particular identifying the regulatory pathways controlling the growth of biofilms of Candida parapsilosis on medical devices; investigating the response of pathogenic yeast to hypoxia; and characterising the role of specific yeast transcription factors in virulence in animal models. Her lab uses a combination of next generation sequencing, comparative genomics and evolutionary biology approaches. Her publications are available on Google Scholar.

The Butler group is a participant in the Horizon 2020 OPATHY International Training Network, ¿From Omics to Patient: Improving Diagnostics of Pathogenic Yeasts¿.

Prof Butler serves as academic editor for the journals PLoS Genetics and mSphere, and she has previously been an editor of PLoS One. She regularly reviews submissions to international journals and research agencies, and she has participated in assessment panels for the Medical Research Council (UK) and the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (France). She is Chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) of the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology at the University of Aberdeen.

Prof Butler is an active teacher. She led the introduction of the single honours degree in Genetics in UCD in 2006, and as acted as Head of Subject ever since. She contributes to teaching in 6 undergraduate modules. She is director of the Wellcome Trust funded PhD Programme in Computational Infection Biology.

Prof Butler was elected Fellow of the Society of Biology in 2011, and member of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) in 2015. She was elected to the council of the RIA in 2016, and she sits on the assessment board for the US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards.

Research

Research Interests

The Butler lab is interested in studying factors controlling virulence in pathogenic fungi, and in particular we are identifying the regulatory pathways controlling the growth of biofilms of Candida parapsilosis on medical devices; investigating the response of pathogenic yeast to hypoxia; and characterising the role of specific yeast transcription factors in virulence in animal models. We have developed  methods for generating gene knockouts in Candida parapsilosis, and we are currently constructing a set of individual knockouts.

We use a number of comparative genomics approaches to study  evolution of the Candida clade, including genomic sequencing and RNA-seq. We developed a genome browser (the Candida Gene Order Browser) to enable analysis of Candida genomes. We are also studying the origin of species (such as Candida orthopsilosis and Candida tropicalis) using whole-genome sequencing of isolates from around the globe.

The lab is a participant in the OPATHY International Training Network, ¿From Omics to Patient: Improving Diagnostics of Pathogenic Yeasts¿. 

Prof Butler is Director of the Wellcome Trust PhD Programme in Computational Infection Biology at UCD.
