| Aoife Gowen is postdoctoral fellow at UCD, whose main research interest is in the application of hyperspectral imaging techniques. In 2006 she obtained a PhD in Food Science from the Dublin Institute of Technology. During her PhD research she investigated the hydration properties of legumes, developing nonlinear models to predict the effects of dehydration processes on legume quality characteristics. She undertook collaborative research at the Technical University of Valencia in Spain, which involved the application of Scanning Electron Microscopy for studying food microstructure. Prior to this she completed an MSc in Financial Mathematics (2001) from Dublin City University and an honors degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin (2000). |
| The researcher joined UCD in 2007 as a postdoctoral fellow, working on Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI). She set up the first facility for hyperspectral imaging for food quality analysis in Ireland by procuring equipment and engaging in transfer of knowledge through international collaborations with leading worldwide researchers in HSI. Her research work involves the application and development of multivariate analysis and image processing techniques for non-destructive assessment of biological products using HSI. She was recently awarded EU FP7 funding under the Marie Curie IOF program to investigate the development of NIR sensor technology for water quality characterization at the University of Kobe in Japan. |
