Dr Ger Devlin obtained his primary degree in BSc. Applied Physics from Dublin City University in 2001. A section of the degree involved securing an internship within the semiconductor industry, Analog Devices B.V., where he worked as a fabrication engineer in the research and development department. On returning to academia in 2003, Dr. Devlin was awarded his PhD degree in Engineering from the Department of Biosystems Engineering, UCD in 2007. His PhD focused on the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and GPS technology in conjunction with developing Spatial Decision Support Systems for route costing calculations across the Irish road network. Dr. Devlin is also a fully licensed articulated truck driver (RSA and CPC). He is currently a research fellow in UCD working in the area of GIS Energy Mapping, energy efficient technologies and optimised transport, logistics and routing. The area of energy efficient and green technologies connects well with Dr Devlin's work as a qualified Building Energy Assessor (BER) for existing and new build domestic dwellings. Energy ratings can be used to determine the efficiency of houses. The area of research revolves around where improvements can be made to increase house efficiency and reduce energy costs through use of the Best Available Technologies. He is also a qualified Thermographer. |
| Dr Devlin's current research interests include the monitoring and modelling of exhaust emissions from articulated trucks together with engine, driver and fuel performance within the broad area of increased GHG emissions in the transport sector in Ireland. This research stems from his parallel work in the Bioenergy sector which deals with topics relating to the Kyoto Protocol such as Biomass Conversion Technologies, Bioenergy crops and Biomas to Biofuel conversion technologies. He is also a qualified Level 1 Thermographer and uses this technology and expertise to also analyse exhaust gas emissions from trucks to attempt to map exhaust emissions from the transport sector. ArcLogistics Routing is a platform for complementing FITPAC model to model routes for biomass for transportation, optimal supply chain logistics, annual variations in crop responses/yields, crop quality, physical location of supplies and end-users, transport routes (their quality, and extent), transport costs and sustainability. The area of incorporating biofuel into the transport sector connects well with the incentive to reduce harmful vehicle GHG emissions and encourage the idea behind a possible Carbon Neutral transport sector. Dr. Devlin also teaches the module "Alternative Biofuels and Renewable Energies" in conjunction with Dr. Kevin McDonnell. This module forms part of the new Green Technology Cert offered by Biosystems Engineering Department under Dr Kevin McDonnells tutorship. This cert was launched in response to the Government's and the Higher Education Authority's (HEA) back to 3rd Level Education for people who have been recently made redundant. |
