| The Charles Parsons Energy Research programme covers three thematic areas of: (1) Bio-resource Assessment—production and supply chain optimisation, including waste to energy, supply logistics, risk assessment and economics; (2) Biomass Conversion Technologies—solid, liquid and gas fuel (bio-fuels) conversion systems, and primarily second generation bio-fuels, with focus on coherent evaluation of the available biomass conversion technologies and their feasibility for use in Ireland; (3) Environmental Impact Assessment—considers biomass to energy pathways, taking account of agricultural production systems, e.g. fertiliser use, waterways and environmental pollution, land-use change (e.g. enhanced soil oxidation - and thus CO2 release - arising from increased tillage) and the opportunity impact associated with substitution of fossil fuels. Dr Owende’s research focuses on biomass-to-energy conversion. His Research and Technology Development (RTD) work portfolio and research supervision includes projects aimed at increasing the overall conversion efficiency and cost efficiency of integrated biomass-to-energy systems to significantly drive down the cost of energy production. The RTD tasks are also aimed at enhancing reliability of process chains and further reduction of environmental impacts, and to eliminate existing technology and policy obstacles to efficient deployment of biomass as a renewable energy resource. |
