Biography

Professor O'Donnell is Head of the UCD School of Biosystems Engineering. He leads a research team working on a range of Process Analytical Technology and Non Thermal Processing research projects funded by the EU Framework Programmes, Irish Research Council, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Enterprise Ireland and industry. Current research projects include Development of Process Analytical Technology Solutions for Quality and Safety Improvement in Dairy Ingredient Manufacture and Ultrasound Assisted Extraction in Food Processing.

He is also Head of the Food Quality and Processing Pillar within the UCD Institute of Food and Health. 
 He has led UCD's involvement in a number of internationally funded Biosystems and Food Engineering research and educational initiatives including EU Tempus,  Lifelong Learning, Comett and Alfa programmes with industry and academic partners in Europe, Australia  and  America. His research outputs include over 130 peer reviewed journal papers and two patents.

He is Editor of the International Journal of Food Properties, Associate Editor (Food Engineering) of Transactions of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and is a member of the Editorial board of Food Engineering Reviews (Springer) and Encyclopedia of Agricultural, Food and Biological Engineering (Taylor & Francis).
