Biography

Assoc. Professor in the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering. His main research area is risk assessment and predictive modelling, with a particular focus on implications for human health and environmental contamination. He has developed his research area to encompass exposure and risk/benefit assessment from chemicals (including acrylamide, beta-glucans, phytochemicals, antimicrobial residues and nanoparticles) and microbials/protozoa (including E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Cryptosporidium, antimicrobial resistant organisms) in different media. He has developed a significant and innovative research portfolio in predictive modelling and risk assessment funded by external peer-reviewed grant agencies. He is currently UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering Head of Research and Innovation and Chair of UCD School of Biosystems Engineering Research Committee. He has published over 50 peer reviewed journal papers and 123 conference papers. He currently has a strong multidisciplinary research team focusing on predictive modelling and risk assessment. He led an EU ERASMUS programme (Life Long Learning programme) on Predictive Modelling and Risk Assessment and is Scientist in Charge for two Marie Skłodowska-Curie awards.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to facilitate student learning and augment problem solving skills through independent thinking and analytical reasoning. This is achieved by stimulating and encouraging class participation while creating a conducive learning environment with a focus on problem-based learning using research and real-life case studies.
 

Enhancement of Teaching

I am an advocate of the constructivism theory of student learning. I promote this in my modules by group exercises, discussion and reflection on previous experiences to solve real-life scenarios, while I participate in an interactive manner. For example, in my module Quantitative Risk Assessment, I pose an environmental/food safety problem and promote group discussion on possible solutions. Each class builds on knowledge gained in previous classes, thus prompting active learning and critical thinking while reflecting on previous case studies. In addition to discussions with peers, students responses are the best sources of improving my teaching techniques which are evolving on a continuous basis. For example, I introduced Quiz Clickers in my module on Food Physics in 2010 in response to student feedback for interactive tools. I find that Quiz Clickers promote student engagement and interaction, and also act as a means of gauging student understanding. For my Power and Machinery module, to better engage students, I introduced a series of in-class group exercises where groups use course materials to discuss and present solutions to an exercise. At the beginning of each module, I provide details of student feedback from the previous year, thus highlighting any changes to the module and closing the feedback loop. Overall, student feedback has been positive. Independent external reviews of module materials has been conducted by external examiners and independent international experts in my discipline. They confirmed the high quality of my teaching and provided valuable suggestions.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

My modules are structured to facilitate active learning by promoting student engagement in class and providing them with in-class exercises to discuss and solve. I advocate the principle of Constructive Alignment (Biggs, 1999), where assessment tasks are aligned with learning outcomes using a number of different assessment methods, including MCQs (e.g. Food Physics BSEN20060), practicals (e.g. Food Physics BSEN20060) and continuous assessment methods (Quantitative Risk Assessment BSEN30060) coupled with a final examination. I continually modify and update the assessments I set for students. I try to ensure students can relate to issues being raised (e.g. looking at the risk of becoming ill from a water/food related contamination event) so that they have a positive learning experience which is maximised when undertaking assignments. These initiatives are in line with the University's Education Strategy to foster early and lasting student engagement. I design my assessment strategy to match module learning outcomes while objectively assessing student learning. Working and communicating in groups is encouraged through the interactive nature of my modules while problem-based learning exercises ensure that key attributes such as problem solving and independent thinking are promoted. I ensure my modules remain relevant by setting imaginative and challenging assignments which take external reviews on board. For example, I restructured Power and Machinery (BSEN30190) to include health and safety aspects resulting from an Engineers Ireland review in 2006. I also introduced a new design element to this module. I restructured Food Physics (BSEN20060) to encompass new developments in the area of food processing measurement. I am a member of the School of Biosystems Engineering Teaching and Learning Committee. Module enhancement and curriculum review initiatives on this committee ensure that my modules remain relevant and link with structured programs while meeting professional standards.

Developing as a Teacher

I ensure my modules remain current by consulting with peers, obtaining external reviews of my modules, including new publications and also by attending relevant conferences in the subject area. My research informs my teaching and ensures I am on top of new developments. I continue to improve as a university teacher by adopting new ideas and good practice. Innovation & Leadership

I integrate innovative aspects of my research into my modules to ensure my teaching remains current and to highlight industrial application and relevance to students. I submitted and coordinated an ERASMUS Lifelong Learning Programme (EU Funded) which brings together 6 leading international institutions with the goal of educating international research students in the area of Predictive Modelling and Risk Assessment. Innovative assessment methods coupled with technological innovations ensure a novel and positive student experience.
