Biography

Dr. Curran is a Fulbright Scholar (TechImpact Award 2017/18) at North Carolina State University on a project to develop an advance warning system for sewer network blockages. He is a graduate of UCD's Engineering programme, holding a BE (Ag & Food), MEngSc (Environmental Engineering) and a PhD in Biosystems Engineering. He worked in production and environmental management in the food industry for a number of years before returning to UCD as a staff member in Biosystems and Food Engineering. His research interests include the measurement, abatement and dispersion modelling of odour, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide from the agrifood and waste management industries. His work also incorporates fat, oil and grease (FOG) waste and sustainable water management. He is currently chair of the quality assurance group in the EU H2020 Agrocycle project on recycling and valorising waste from the agri-food sector. His teaching centres on the application of environmental engineering in the agrifood and bioresource industries. Dr. Curran is the Director of the MSc Environmental Technology degree programme. He has received teaching awards from both UCD (2008 & 2017) and the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and research awards from both UCD (President's Award) and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) (Superior Paper Award). He served as the Chairman of the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland (ESAI) (2014-16).

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My experience as a student and later in industry has informed my philosophy in relation to teaching and learning, especially the importance of a student-centred approach to encourage critical thinking. I believe that it is essential to reflect on my teaching by taking account of student feedback to enhance learning.

Enhancement of Teaching

I have been a student on the UCD Professional Diploma in University Teaching & Learning programme (2012-14). I found this to be an excellent opportunity to discuss teaching and learning with colleagues and reflect on my own practice. In class, I place an emphasis on allocating time for group discussion on projects in order to share learning experiences. This also facilitates my giving formative feedback to students on their project work. When delivering learning materials in the online setting, I aim to make the experience engaging by having Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) at the end of each session to allow students to receive feedback automatically without being penalised. I welcome feedback from students both through the UCD feedback forms online and by other means. I take on board comments from students as part of the module review process with School colleagues.

Developing as a Teacher

I completed the UCD Professional Diploma in University Teaching & Learning programme (2012-14). I found this to be an excellent opportunity to discuss teaching and learning with colleagues and reflect on my own practice. I attended workshops organised by UCD Teaching and Learning and I share relevant information with colleagues in this regard. I have been lead author on several papers with colleagues in UCD (problem based learning and online learning) and the TABE.NET network (undergraduate design experiences and video podcasts with international student peer review).

Innovation & Leadership

- 2009 Excellence in Teaching Materials and Methods in Biological and Agricultural Engineering Award from American Society of Engineering Education; - 2008 UCD College of Life Sciences Teaching Award in Recognition of Contribution to Education; - Leader of Transatlantic Biosystems Engineering Network International Collaborative Design Project using video podcasts and student peer review. See http://www.ucd.ie/tabe/design.html and related papers on my list of publications.
