Biography

Alessio Cozzolino joined University College Dublin as an Assistant Professor in Strategy in September 2015. He holds a PhD in Business Administration and Management from Bocconi University, and a MSc in Engineering Management from the University of Rome La Sapienza. In 2014, he has been visiting scholar at Georgia Tech in the US.

His PhD dissertation won the 2015 INFORMS Best Dissertation Award (TIMES - Technology, Innovation Management, and Entrepreneurship Section). His papers received awards such as the Honorable Mention of the SMS Best Conference Paper Prize (at the Strategic Management Society 2013) and the AOM Best Paper Proceeding (at the Academy of Management 2017). In 2013-2015, he received a Telecom Italia Research Grant for his current studies.

Alessio's research examines how technological changes alter the competitive advantage between incumbents and entrants. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods, he theorizes and tests the mechanisms through which firms strategically react to complementary asset-destroying discontinuities, changes that preserve the core know-how of established organizations while destroying their assets. He takes a phenomenon-driven approach to study digital transformations in knowledge and cultural industries, especially within the newspaper business. His work has been accepted for publication in Strategic Management Journal (SMJ).

Alessio has taught on undergraduate, graduate and MBA courses on Technology & Innovation Management at Bocconi and Georgia Tech. He teaches both 'Strategy' and 'Technology & Innovation Management' for UCD in Dublin, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Prior to his PhD, Alessio worked for five years in the HQ of a large Media Company, Gruppo Editoriale l'Espresso. More recently, he also collaborated for two years with Telecom Italia on a major research-based industrial project.
